Tie Clips and Tie Pins: The Complete Guide to Wearing Them Correctly

A tie clip (also called a tie bar) is a small metal clasp that holds a necktie in place against a shirt, preventing it from swinging or flipping. A tie pin achieves the same result by piercing through the tie and shirt rather than clasping over them. Both are functional first, decorative second — but worn at the wrong spot or angle, either one looks like an afterthought instead of a finishing touch.

Tie Clip vs. Tie Bar vs. Tie Pin: What's the Difference

Tie Clip Tie Bar Tie Pin
How it attaches Spring clip, clasps over fabric Slides on, no clasp Pierces through fabric
Grip strength Strong Light Strong, permanent hole
Best width Any Slim, minimalist ties Any
Formality Business to formal Business casual Formal, vintage-inspired

The One Rule That Matters: Placement

A tie clip should sit between the third and fourth button of your dress shirt — roughly chest height, never at the belt and never above the sternum. It should clip through both the tie and the shirt placket to keep the tie anchored, and should be angled slightly, not perfectly horizontal, for the most natural look.

Should the Tie Clip Match the Tie Width?

As a general rule, a tie clip should be slightly narrower than the tie itself — roughly 80% of the tie's width. A clip that is wider than the tie looks oversized; one that is much narrower gets lost. Our Tie Accessories collection includes clips, pins, and cufflink sets sized for standard necktie widths.

When Not to Wear a Tie Clip

  • With a vest or waistcoat — the clip will be hidden anyway and can create a visible bulge.
  • With very thick or textured ties — such as a knitted tie, where the clip can distort the weave.
  • Stacked with a tie pin — choose one or the other, not both at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly should a tie clip go on a shirt?
Between the third and fourth button from the top, roughly at mid-chest height, clipping through both the tie and the shirt placket.

Can I wear a tie clip with a skinny tie?
Yes. Choose a slimmer clip sized to about 80% of the tie's width so it does not overhang the edges.

Is a tie pin more formal than a tie clip?
Tie pins tend to read as slightly more formal and vintage-inspired, since they were the original method before spring clips became common, but both are appropriate for business and formal settings.

Do I need a tie clip if I'm wearing a vest?
No. A vest or waistcoat already holds the tie in place, so a clip is unnecessary and may create an unwanted bulge.
