What Interlining Actually Is?
Interlining is the hidden internal layer — usually wool, wool-blend, or a wool/cotton mix — sewn or floated inside the tie's fold, sandwiched between the outer silk shell and the lining. You never see it. You never touch it directly. But it's the structural skeleton of the entire garment.
Its three jobs:
- Body and recoil — gives the tie enough resistance to hold a four-in-hand or half-Windsor knot without collapsing flat
- Drape control — determines whether the tie hangs straight or twists after a few hours of wear
- Shape memory — allows the tie to spring back to its original form after being untied, rather than staying creased
Remove interlining entirely and you get a tie that behaves like a scarf: soft, flat, and structurally dead.

The Weight Number Nobody Talks About
Interlining weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm), and it's the single spec that correlates most directly with tie longevity. We pulled the interlining from a construction sample in our workshop and weighed it on a jeweler's scale: 68 gsm, 100% wool, plain weave, cut on the bias at 45 degrees.
That bias cut matters as much as the weight. Interlining cut on the true bias stretches and recovers with the silk's natural give. Interlining cut on the straight grain fights the silk, and the tie develops a visible twist within months.

Why Cheap Ties Skip This Entirely?
Mass-market ties often use fused or bonded interlining — a synthetic layer glued rather than floated freely inside the fold. It's faster to produce and costs a fraction as much. The problem shows up after the first dry clean: fused interlining doesn't move independently from the silk shell, so heat and pressure delaminate it. The tie develops bubbling, hard creases, or a stiff "cardboard" feel exactly where it should be softest.
Traditional construction — the approach we use on every Tiegent tie — floats the interlining as a separate, unattached layer, hand-tacked at three to four points along the seam. This lets silk and wool move independently, which is what preserves drape through repeated wear and cleaning.

How to Check Interlining Quality Without Cutting the Tie Open?
You don't need to destroy a tie to assess this. Three checks, in order of reliability:
- The roll test — loosely roll the tie from tip to tip. Quality interlining springs back to flat within seconds. Poor interlining stays creased.
- The pinch test — pinch the blade between two fingers. You should feel a soft, slightly springy resistance, not a hard board-like layer or a total absence of structure.
- The knot recovery test — tie and untie a full Windsor. A well-interlined tie shows no visible crease line after five minutes. A fused or underweight interlining leaves a permanent fold mark.

Why This Outlasts the Silk Conversation?
Silk grade gets marketed heavily because it's visible and easy to photograph. Interlining gets ignored because it's invisible — which is exactly why it's underpriced as a talking point and overweighted as a durability factor. A tie with mediocre silk and excellent interlining will outlast a tie with premium silk and fused interlining by years, not months.
